Afghani Women Stripped of Rights Ahead of Election

Elections in Afghanistan are coming up, this Thursday and to say the least, political tensions are rising. A new law has emerged that states that a wife must have sex with her husband at least every four days. This means that she does not have to agree to it, as it is law. If she refuses, he simply starves her.
This is such a fundamental right that even when writing this blog, I am appalled beyond words. If a woman does not have the option to say no, this is basically saying that rape is completely acceptable.
And what is the point to the passing of this law? It is so that Afghan President Hamid Karzi can win the conservative Shia vote in this upcoming election. BBC reports, “What matters more to Karzai is the support of fundamentalists and hardliners here in Afghanistan whose support he thinks he needs in the elections.”
What does it cost to win an election? Is it the freedom of every woman in Afghanistan, including your wives, mothers and daughters? Let’s spread the word and make sure that every woman is aware of how even though in the West, women's rights have come very far, there are still many countries that oppress women institutionally. This is not acceptable and we must take action.

Promote peace, have & exhibit love for human kind and respect for all life, and
act with sanity and good intentions to others in all endeavers.
That's the way to live well, truthfully, and with peace of mind, which in turn
promotes peace and a deep sense of satisfaction in having lived a life of
decency and worth. We're only human and cannot always be as perfect as our
loving, healing, merciful God, but as long as we're continually striving to be
closer to the Holy spirit and what he expects of us (to love, not hate our
neighbors)... then we're bound for improvement, and we'll evolve into far better
humans, occupying a far friendlier world. We have the capacity to "grow up" in
this way, and it is a choice.
As a woman in America, and a soldier in the US Army, I find it outragous that some thing so horrilbe could even exist. However, I have spent time in the middle east and have experianced the demeaning of women first hand. I can only pray for the enlightment of this culture. I really think that the exployting of the underline veiws of ratical islam is the best thing for the Aerican culture as a whole. I hope that it can open some eyes to those who think that thay could never be effected. Most of my friends couldnt believe the things I had shared with them about my experiences, no matter how mild they are. Thanks for what you guys are doin!
