The Sad Reality of Child Brides

Over the past week, we have heard about two extremely tragic incidents from Yemen regarding child brides. Last week a 13-year-old bride bled to death after she was married. Her husband forced her to have sex and eventually raped her to death. A few days ago, a second story surfaced of an 11-year-old girl who was hospitalized with genital injuries. In this case her husband said that he would wait until she reached puberty to consummate the marriage, but unsurprisingly he did not. In February of 2009 a law was introduced in Yemen stating that girls could not marry until the age of 17, but the law was repealed because some lawmakers viewed it as “un-Islamic.” This statement reinforces the notion of child brides is in fact supported by Islam. We often hear about these stories from human rights organizations, such as UNICEF and Oxfam, but they claim to treat these situations carefully for fear of an explosive political issue. However, we must ask: if this issue is not worth fighting against what is? Read more about these stories here and here and then make a difference. Send 5 “Did You Know” statements to your family and friends and help raise awareness about the reality of child brides. Use the space below to have a discussion and brainstorm about how we as individuals can help put an end to this horrific reality.

Does Jihad Jane Represent the New Wave of Terrorism?

jane1jane2 Does this woman represent the future of terrorism? We have heard about suicide bombers that were female, but a homegrown terrorist that is a woman is a rare commodity. If you haven't heard the story, check any website (CNN, LA Times, etc). What do we think? To me this just proves how dangerous and prevalent the threat of homegrown terrorism really is. Or could you just say it is a step forward for women, giving them the same opportunity to terrorize as men? I think the lesson that needs to be learned here is that we have a problem when a random American women decides to join forces with radical Muslims.

Egyptian Women's Rights - Here yesterday gone today?

Guess which picture is more recent? As Egypt becomes increasingly radicalized, we see the rights of women moving further and further back in time. Nonie Darwish, featured in Obsession, explains how this radicalization is in part, a rejection of Western values. egypt1 egypt2
"Expecting Muslim women to be behind the reformation of Islam and Sharia, is like asking slaves to end their own slavery without their masters’ approval or asking prisoners to get out of prison without the guards opening the doors. […] For Muslim women to simply revolt against Islamic gender apartheid will be regarded as anti-man, anti-family, anti-religion, anti-government and worst of all, anti-Allah himself."
Check out Nonie's take on the potential for a feminist movement in the near future here.

Rifqa Bary Update: CAIR is on the Case

Rifqa Bary’s story is continuing to unravel as one of her friends posts an update of her situation. Apparently her parents are being represented by CAIR appointed attorneys whose goal is to destroy Rifqa’s story and prove that she is safe at home. Since the December 22nd hearing Rifqa has not had any contact with any friends or visitors. This is because of CAIR’s push to keep her in isolation. These are the worst conditions than she has undergone until now.  The next hearing is slated for January 28th so stay tuned. In the meantime, you can make a difference by emailing the director of Children’s services and let him know that the restrictions that Rifqa faces are nothing short of abusive. Emails should be sent to Eric Fenner - edfenner@FCCS.co.franklin.oh.us Click here to read the entire update on Rifqa Bary.
